There's a tremendous amount of controversy surrounding a phenomenon known as being 'slain in the Spirit'. I'm referring to situations where people fall over backwards as though they've been knocked out cold by the power of the Holy Spirit.
In some Pentecostal churches the person falling out under the power of God is safely caught and lowed to the ground by the hands of a catcher who stands behind the falling person. This is done to prevent injury.
This expository teaching will give much needed understanding on this issue. It presents objective biblical truth, expels myths, and hopefully will balance in the house of God.
Biblical References
I must conclude that there is an abundance of scriptural evidence to conclude that people in the bible were slain in the spirit and fell over backwards. These persons fell out due to being overwhelmed by the weight of God's Shekinah. Let's explore scripture and look at a few examples:
{John 18:6, Mark 9:20, Luke 8:27-29, Acts 5:5, Acts 9:4-8, Rev. 1:17, I Kings 8:11, II Chron. 5:14, and many more}.
EXAMPLE #1
Mark 9: 17 {Young's Literal Translation}
'..and one out of the multitude answering said, `Teacher, I brought my son unto thee, having a dumb spirit; and wherever it doth seize him, it doth tear him, and he foameth, and gnasheth his teeth, and pineth away; and I spake to thy disciples that they may cast it out, and they were not able.'
And he answering him, said, `O generation unbelieving, till when shall I be with you? till when shall I suffer you? bring him unto me;'
(20) and they brought him unto him, and he having seen him, immediately the spirit tare him, and he, having fallen upon the earth, was wallowing -- foaming.
And he questioned his father, `How long time is it since this came to him?' and he said, `From childhood, and many times also it cast him into fire, and into water, that it might destroy him; but if thou art able to do anything, help us, having compassion on us.'
(23) And Jesus said to him, `If thou art able to believe! all things are possible to the one that is believing;' and immediately the father of the child, having cried out, with tears said, `I believe, sir; be helping mine unbelief.'
(25) Jesus having seen that a multitude doth run together, rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, `Spirit -- dumb and deaf -- I charge thee, come forth out of him, and no more thou mayest enter into him;' and having cried, and rent him much, it came forth, and he became as dead, so that many said that he was dead, but Jesus, having taken him by the hand, lifted him up, and he arose.'
After reading this story in it's entirety, I want you to take note of a few interesting facts:
Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and commanded it to come out and enter the child no more. There was a physical response to the command of Christ Jesus.
The physical response was that the unclean spirit cried out of the boy, caused convulsions and made the boy fall to the ground. But it did indeed come out.
The boy was left in condition which caused onlookers to believe that the child was dead. The child had passed out on the ground. He did not kneel down to pray or bow down to worship. Nothing in this passage suggest such a thing. The boy had a dramatic encounter with the power of God that left him appearing to be lifeless on the ground.
Jesus took the boy by the hand and lifted him up off the ground. (See verse 25)
Being lifted off the ground from a state whereby he appeared dead can certainly be associated with being 'slain in or slain by' the Spirit of the Lord.
The story also suggests that that Jesus was trying to avoid the big crowds and the appearance of sensationalism (See verse 25). Thus, Jesus worked by casting out the unclean spirit quickly trying to avoid a big show.
Modern preachers behave in a manner just the opposite of Jesus Christ. They want the big show and want the crowds to believe that they have the power. They promote themselves and the supposed anointing they carry. If you don't fall down when they touch you on the head, some preachers will do their best to push you over. This is an embarrassing truth that must be dealt with without compromise.
EXAMPLE #2
Acts 5:5
1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?
While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.
6 And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him. 7 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said, “Yes, for so much.”
"Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. 11 So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.' - Acts 5
I specifically choose to write concerning this remarkable encounter with the power of God because it drives home several critical points.
- Peter is responsible for speaking the purpose and Will of God as it pertained to Ananias and Sapphira. The words Peter spoke released the power, the authority and will of God for that situation.
- Peter perceived the heart of God the Father as it pertained to this situation. Peter understood by divine insight that the actions of these liars was worthy of death. It is very important to understand that Peter was led by the Spirit to speak those words.
- If something like this were to happen in this modern church era, Peter would certainly be brought up on criminal charges. The religious crowd would say, "Peter, your behavior can not be backed up by Torah (the Jewish bible). Therefore, you are not a true man of God". The Internet will be filled with slanderous attacks against Peter for killing a man under the influence of God's Holy Spirit. *Let's meditate on this for awhile, shall we?
EXAMPLE #3
John 18:3-8 (Young's Literal Translation)
'Judas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons;
4Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, `Whom do ye seek?'
5they answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;' Jesus saith to them, `I am [he];' -- and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them; --
6when, therefore, he said to them -- `I am [he],' they went away backward, and fell to the ground.
7 Again, therefore, he questioned them, `Whom do ye seek?' and they said, `Jesus the Nazarene;'
8 Jesus answered, `I said to you that I am [he]; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;'
Comment: Upon referring to the Young's Literal Greek Translation of the bible the word {he} is not actually in the original manuscript. It was inserted by the English translators.
This means, Jesus Christ actually made the statement, 'I AM' when addressing the soldiers who asked if He was the Christ. As soon as Christ said I AM, the men fell backwards to the ground. They didn't kneel down or take a few steps back to contemplate things. No. They fell backwards exactly as the bible describes.
American Standard Version - John 18:6
'When therefore he said unto them, "I am He", they went backward, and fell to the ground.'
It's important to understand who these men were that came after Jesus. They were not worshippers or disciples. These were hired soldiers and officers who, like bounty hunters came to collect Jesus. Again we see that words were spoken from the lips of Jesus that produced an effect on the bystanders. What caused them to fall backwards? Did they kneel down to contemplate whether or not to follow Jesus? No, they fell backwards. Let's not twist and manipulate scripture to teach otherwise. They fell backwards.
My 25 Years of Experience in This Area
If you are fortunate to have a real God encounter of this magnitude, there's nothing in the world that compares to it. The real thing is what I'm referring to. I have fallen out under the power of God and have no shame in admitting it.
I have encountered God Almighty in the unmistakable glory of His love. I have stood under the tangible presence of His Shekinah glory cloud and even seen it with my own eyes. The glory cloud. There was no music, no mass hypnosis, no power of suggestion. On a few occassions, the weight of His glory was so strong, that I physically could not stand up. {Identical to I Kings 8:11}. I had to wait for His glory to lift. Then I was able to stand to my feet, but it was slow at that.
Here are a few things that happened when I encountered the glory of God and fell out:
- A preacher did not have to lay hands on me. God did it all by Himself.
- The encounter with God changed me forever. God produced an effect in me that purified my character, purged my heart and caused me to forgive and love in a greater way. At other times produced a healing in my body.
- The encounter gave me a deeper and greater reverence for the awesome majesty of Jesus Christ. {I can not overstate this enough}.
- It was not a laughing matter, a thrill or a time to shout. I was in a state of profound awe at the Holiness of Jesus.
- The times that I did fall out, God's Spirit encouraged me and ministered to me by allowing scripture to race through my mind. As scripture went through my mind it came to life and had power. I understood it more clearly. I got up with a sense of direction, purpose and clarity.
- I did not fall backwards for the mere sake of falling. God produced His desired result.
These were my experiences. Under no circumstances am I suggesting that all encounters with God have to match up with mine. I am not suggesting that at all. What I am suggesting is that, God still visits His children today in the tangible presence of His Holy Spirit, just like he did in the bible days. Men can debate scripture, argue and fuss over the Hebrew and Greek meanings of certain words. How foolish! The facts to me are clear. Jesus Christ changed my life and in a powerful way. I can not deny it. Yes, sometimes He had to knock me out to get my stubborn rebellious carnal nature out of His way.
