KEYS TO A GREATER MEASURE OF GRACE

  1. Anointing
    Hebrew; מן
    shemen, or sheh'-men
From H8080; grease, especially liquid (as from the olive, often perfumed); figuratively richness: - anointing, fat (things), fruitful, oil ([-ed]), ointment, olive, + pine.
  2. Greek;
    G5545 / χρίσμα
    chrisma or khris'-mah
From G5548; an unguent or smearing, that is, (figuratively) the special endowment ("chrism") of the Holy Spirit: - anointing, unction.

    Anoint
    Hebrew, משׁח
    H4886; mâshach / maw-shakh'
A primitive root; to rub with oil, that is, to anoint; by implication to consecrate; also to paint: - anoint, paint. A primitive root; properly to smear over (with oil), that is, anoint: - anoint (self), X at all.

(1.) The act of anointing was significant of consecration to a holy or sacred use; hence the anointing of the high priest (Exodus 29:29; Lev. 4:3) and of the sacred vessels (Exodus 30:26).

The high priest and the king are thus called “the anointed” (Lev. 4:3, Lev. 4:5, Lev. 4:16; Lev_6:20; Psa_132:10). Anointing a king was equivalent to crowning him (1Sam. 16:13; 2Sa_2:4, etc.).

(2.) Anointing was also an act of hospitality (Luke 7:38, Luke 7:46). It was the custom of the Jews in like manner to anoint themselves with oil, as a means of refreshing or invigorating their bodies (Deut. 28:40; Ruth 3:3; 2 Sam. 14:2; Psalms 104:15, etc.). This custom is continued among the Arabians to the present day.

(3.) Oil was used also for medicinal purposes. It was applied to the sick, and also to wounds (Isa_1:6; Mar_6:13; Jam_5:14).

(4.) The bodies of the dead were sometimes anointed (Mar_14:8; Luk_23:56).
(5.) The promised Delivered is twice called the “Anointed” or Messiah (Psa_2:2; Dan_9:25, Dan_9:26), because he was anointed with the Holy Ghost (Isa_61:1), figuratively styled the “oil of gladness” (Psa_45:7; Heb_1:9). Jesus of Nazareth is this anointed One (Joh_1:41; Act_9:22; Act_17:2, Act_17:3; Act_18:5, Act_18:28), the Messiah of the Old Testament.

GREEK
As Defined in New Testament Greek
1. ALEIPHO (218) is a general term used for an anointing of any kind, whether of physical refreshment after washing, e.g., in the N.T., Matt. 6:17; Luke 7:38, 46; John 11:2; 12:3; or of the sick, Mark 6:13; Jas. 5:14; or a dead body, Mark 16:1. The material used was either oil, or ointment, as in Luke 7:38, 46.

2. CHRIO (5548) is more limited in its use than No. 1; it is confined to sacred and symbolical anointings; of Christ as the Anointed of God, Luke 4:18 Acts 4:27; 10:38, and Heb. 1:9, where it is used metaphorically in connection with "the oil of gladness." The title Christ signifies "The Anointed One."

The word (Christos) is rendered "(His) Anointed" in Acts 4:26, R.V. Once it is said of believers, 2 Cor. 1:21. Chriom is very frequent in the Sept., and is used of kings, 1 Sam. 10:1, and priests, Ex. 28:41, and prophets, 1 Kings 19:16. Note: The distinction referred to by Trench (Syn. ' xxxviii), that aleiphom is the mundane and profane, chriom, the sacred and religious word, is not borne out by evidence. In a papyrus document chrisis is used of "a lotion for a sick horse" (Moulton and Milligan, Vocab. of Greek Test).

3. ENCHRIO (1472), primarily, to rub in, hence, to besmear, to anoint, is used metaphorically in the command to the church in Laodicea to anoint their eyes with eyesalve, Rev. 3:18.

4. EPICHRIO (2025), primarily, to rub on (epi, upon), is used of the blind man whose eyes Christ anointed, and indicates the manner in which the anointing was done, John 9:6, 11.
5. murizom (3462) is used of anointing the body for burial, in Mark 14:8

When Pentecostals or Word of Faith pundits refer to the anointing, they should actually make reference to the Shekinah.

This is a Hebrew word for 'the tangible majestic presence of YHWH dwelling with man.' It was the shekinah glory of God in the Person of Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) that fell on the 120 in the Upper Room on the Day of Pentecost. It is God's Shekinah that we long to see manifested and expressed in our hearts, in our churches and when we minister to the sick and afflicted. Now that we understand what we really asking God for, let's explore how to get more!

HOW DO I GET A GREATER MEASURE OF GRACE UPON MY LIFE?

1 Peter 5:6 'Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time'.

Matt. 23:12 'And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Jas 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.'

The key to activating and see the manifestation of the greater grace on your life is to obey Isaiah 58:4-9

WHAT ABOUT THE DOUBLE PORTION ANOINTING?
What about... is the right question! It's not in scripture. Look at Elisha, the protegee of Elijah. It was Elijah the prophet who let Elisha pick up his mantel (robe or talit) IF certain conditions were met. The mantel could be picked up only if Elisha could {see, perceive, understand) Elijah as he was going up in the chariot. Did Elisha ask for a double portion of the anointing?
No. let's look at II Kings 2:9, "...let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me." Notice carefully that Elisha was asking for a double (second form *as clarified in Hebrew manuscripts) of Elijah's spirit. He was not asking for God's Spirit or gifts of power, but a second form of Elijah's own life force {ruach}.
It's not different than a kid desiring to be like his hero. Not just in physical exploits, but Elisha was able to see things from Elijah's perspective! This was the key to catching the mantel.

Now let's talk about Moses and Joshua. Another misunderstood teaching on catching the mantel or double portion. {Numbers 27:15 -18} In this passage of scripture Moses is instructed by God to lay hands on Joshua and give him a measure of his own 'honor'. Certainly, Joshua is blessed by Moses through the laying on of hands. But keep in mind, Moses is following God's instruction! Nothing is being sold. Joshua already had the spirit of God in him. (Just like you do. It didn't come from man).
The decision to consecrate Joshua was already in the plan of God.
The blessing was for sale. In fact, God proceeds to instruct Moses to present Joshua before Eleazar the High Priest and the entire congregation. Notice the flow of accountibility, community, validation and process. God is doing things in order.
NO ONE MAN IS THE SUPREME BOSS.
It's after Joshua's public consecration that included Moses, Eleazar, the congregation, and the laying on of hands that Joshua received the Spirit of wisdom. This is noted in Deut. 34:9. Beloved, stop sending your hard earned money to false prophets and teachers. You've received the truth, now God expects you to judge it and conduct yourself accordingly.

What We Can Do, to See the Works of God
Only believe.

"He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; AND GREATER WORKS SHALL HE DO; because I go to my Father..." (John 14:12)

Dear friend, that is not a misprint in your bible. Yes, Jesus declares that you can do GREATER WORKS than he did. Sorry, if your pastor or church doesn't believe what Jesus says here. But we do. We believe it, and we have decided to obey him and do greater works in His name. What about you? Will you join us?
